Thesis Title: Relationship Management – the Route to a Sustainable Construction Industry

Current Thesis Abstract: There is no one best management approach. The construction industry has a unique socio-technical context, some aspects of which see well-suited to relational approaches. The potential benefits of relational approaches (such as construction partnering) have received strong interest in the construction industry since the 1980’s with the potential benefits highlighted in a stream of literature. However, despite support for relational contracting, it has not yet been universally adopted as the dominate strategy by construction organisations.

In Modernising Construction published by NAO and Sir John Egan’s report on Accelerating Change, both reports highlight the construction industry needs to have better management of construction supply chains and more integration of the supply process to achieve sustainable construction. However, studies of relationship management approaches have been focussed on the main players, client and main contractor, but not the whole project team. This research aims to shed some light on the issue by examining relationship management approaches in the Australian construction industry, with a focus on the supply chain. A grounded approach will be adopted and data will be collected through interviews, questionnaire survey and case studies.
