Profile

Mike Hefferan was the Director of Queensland University of Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Resources, a cross-faculty organisation of almost 200 researchers with particular interest in sustainable built environments, resource management and social dimensions of change. He remains an Adjunct Professor with Queensland University of Technology.

Mike was previously an executive director within the State Government for 12 years, with industry development, property development and asset management responsibilities. In those areas, he managed the largest commercial and industrial property portfolios in the state and some of the most significant property development projects here in the last decade including major Brisbane CBD development and redevelopments such as the Roma Street parklands and projects in Gladstone and Townsville. He was also instrumental in the introduction of the Queensland Smart State initiative and its related research and development funding.

Mike is a Registered Urban and Rural Valuer, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a member of the Property Council of Australia and of the Urban Development Institute of Australia. He is a Board Member of the Australian Property Institute, the Australian Green Development Forum and the Centre for Subtropical Design. He has researched and lectured in a number of universities in Australia, throughout Asia and in the U.S. at the University of Texas in Austin, Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania. On a personal note he enjoys sailing and is a rugby union referee.
