Media Release

One of QUT’s full-time Doctor of Philosophy (Law) students, Nicola Durrant, has been selected from over 250 applicants worldwide to attend a PhD colloquium on Earth System Governance in Amsterdam in May this year. This colloquium will provide Nicola with a unique opportunity to present the findings of her PhD research on Climate Change Law to an international audience of environmental governance researchers.

Nicola’s multidisciplinary research is part of a collaboration between the QUT Faculty of Law and Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR). Her attendance at this colloquium has been made possible by the financial support of the ISR and School of Law. Nicola is supervised by Professor Douglas Fisher (Law) and Professor Peter Grace (Science).

Nicola is currently researching the legal requirements for establishing a global emissions trading system that incorporates all nations including Australia and developing countries. Nicola’s research is a hot topic given the current political discussions on the risks of climatic changes and Australia’s policy options to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Her presentation to the PhD colloquium will comment on the strengths and weaknesses of current international laws addressing Climate Change and will provide some recommendations for reform.

Nicola holds a specialised environmental law degree from Griffith University and was previously employed as a solicitor in the environment group of the law firm Blake Dawson Waldron, Sydney. Nicola says that undertaking her PhD research is both a challenging and incredibly rewarding experience and she is looking forward to sharing her research findings with the international community in May.
