The Fed Govt is preparing to review its exceptional circumstances drought policy to take into account the effects of climate change. The PM made the announcement while opening an agricultural conference in Canberra this morning. But while Rudd stressed he won't be walking away from farmers in need, he says it's time to ensure that farmers are better prepared to deal with drought. Kevin Rudd, Australian Prime Minister, says the Govt wants to ensure that any assistance provided to farmers improves the resilience of farmers and farm businesses into the future. Matt O'Hearn, Beef Farmer, says Rudd visited his farm last year and believes the PM was impressed to find young people in the bush trying to use innovative ideas in farming. Peter Grace, Professor of Global Change, Queensland University of Technology, says more research is required because it's expensive to determine how much carbon is in soils across landscapes, though that is an essential element of any sustainable agricultural system, and the farmers will be more productive if they move in that direction.
