Interview Description

4BC (Brisbane), Drive, 07/02/2008 04:08PM
Compere: John Miller

Miller says there is an ongoing debate as to whether water restrictions in Brisbane should be eased in the wake of recent heavy rainfall. Miller says the Gold Coast restrictions have been lifted, and suggests recent rainfall is merely a reprieve. Miller says the Brisbane Times poll today suggested sixty six percent of people believed we should not lift water restrictions. Miller says people have learned a big lesson in water conservation over recent years, and praises Greg Cary's water allocation idea. Miller introduces Peter Grace, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Resources at QUT. Grace says it is too early to make changes to water restrictions, and says we are playing catch up on water infrastructure. Miller suggests other infrastructure needs to be built. Grace says there are also transport infrastructure problems with Busways, and suggests everything reaches capacity, and cities like Mexico City have reached capacity. Grace suggests a western suburbs railline has never been built and says the Gold Coast is fast reaching capacity. Grace suggests the south east Qld water levels would have to get to fifty percent before restrictions could be eased.
