The intention of this presentation is to introduce a basic understanding of coal from both a geological and industrial perspective. Coal is a natural material that is currently vital in maintaining the current state of human economic and industrial growth. This is not only from a power generating perspective but also in the manufacturing of steel, cement, alumina, polymers, resins, catalysts and composite fibres. The use of coal has been a controversial issue for many years and it is important to have a balanced perspective as to its place in human society.
