On Wednesday the 12th of November 2008, Microsoft and QUT's Faculty of Information Technology will host a seminar titled What Plentiful Bits, Bandwidth, and Pixels can provide in the Future?. The seminar's speaker Professor Gordon Bell is a principal researcher with the Microsoft Research Group, San Francisco (1995-) working on a system, MyLifeBits to capture everything in a person's life.
Telepresence and other information technologies appear to have done little to reduce energy consumption. Telepresence may just stimulate face-to-face contact demand. Arguments can be made for the reduction of paper as an information carrier. As we go deeper into cyberspace, friction due to travel and physical media transportation can be reduced or eliminated in every area from finance and publications to medical care.

On Friday the 21st of November 2008, the Institute for Sustainable Resources will host a seminar titled Climate Change and the Arctic Ice Melt - the Summer
Cloud Ocean Study featuring Dr Ristovski from the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, QUT. In the past several years Dr Ristovski and his team were involved in a number of international multidisciplinary campaigns addressing atmospheric particle formation processes from various biogenic sources (oceans, forest, etc.) They were trying to answer some important questions on how are atmospheric particles formed in environments not perturbed by human activity and importantly what makes some of these particles become an efficient cloud condensation nuclei and therefore influence cloud formation and climate.

The opportunity to change lies in the ability to reach back to our past to empower the link between the community and its food supply and to change the perceptions we have of waste. Zero Waste is about Climate Change, it is about working with community and Government to develop a program which supports the whole.

The objective of Lee's research project is to investigate corporate responsibility, that is, the responsibility of corporations and their officers, in relation to climate change. The project will employ a multi-disciplinary doctrinal methodology across the disciplines of law and business. It will critically examine relevant laws, principles, and in particular, empirical evidence from the discipline of business.

The 3rd to the 6th of September will be host to the significant event Subtropical Cities 2008. This event will focus on Subtropical Urbanism and its changing path into the future. Renowned experts from around the world will present their advice on issues such as; the urban and rural interface, community health and urban form, Global Warming solutions for the Subtropics, as well as presentations on test-runs of radical best practise ideas. Dr Elizabeth Tindle

Recent international developments in solar thermal power generation

Development of solar thermal power generation over the past decade has been closely followed by Peter Williams and Martin Adams, who are working towards developing their own solar generation and storage technology in their company Regenesys Pty Ltd. Peter and Martin have recently returned from attending the 14th Biennial SolarPaces Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be speaking about recent advances in solar thermal power (parabolic trough Systems, dish engine Systems and heliostat tower systems) and describe a site visit to Nevada Solar One, a 64 MW parabolic trough plant.

Dr. Andre Dantas will review the position with respect to New Zealand’s access to liquid transport fuels over the next 25 years. He will briefly describe a novel analysis, which allows conversion of supply and demand data into shortfall probability distributions. Dr Dantas will introduce a long-term planning tool called RECATS (Risk of Energy Constraint Activity Transportation Systems) which calculates a risk factor at a queried year in the future for a given urban form and travel demand configuration.

The call for papers for the 11th International Riversymposium is now open. This symposium will explore the challenges associated with the increased incidence of flooding and drought expected with climate change.
The Riversymposium is also offering a Young Water Scientist Award. Any young scientist currently undertaking postgraduate research on water, through any recognized institution within Australia, is eligible to enter.
