Land Use at the Airport MetropolisNicholas J Stevens PhD 2007 - 2011 Faculty Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering Supervisor/s Prof Douglas Baker, Dr Severine Mayere Thesis Abstract Airports in Australia and overseas are fast becoming major business centres, supported by private and commercial enterprises. As a result, a range of issues and impacts now pose considerable challenges for both airports and the surrounding urban and regional environment, especially in the area of land-use planning.
The situation is further complicated under the airport ownership structure in Australia where local and state government control of on-airport development is limited to consultative processes, and no mechanism exists for airport operator input into regional development. Stakeholders are therefore unable to endorse, influence or veto land -use planning decisions of the other. Cooperative and coordinated airport and regional land use planning will only be facilitated if the motive, resources and expectations of an increasingly diverse number of acknowledged decision-makers are understood. The primary research aim is to examine how land-use planning has impacted land-use outcomes in and around capital city airports in Australia. It will document and evaluate current and historical airport and regional land uses, and provide guidance and insight into the past and present decision-making processes of airport metropolis stakeholders. |
