Growing sustainable regions: developing a rural statistical sustainability frameworkErandika O Manawadu Masters by Research 2009 - 2011 Faculty Faculty of Science and Technology Supervisor/s Dr Tony Sahama, Dr Evonne Miller Thesis Abstract The rural communities in Australia are facing various economic, environmental and social challenges. Therefore there is a need to develop tools that facilitate evidence based decision making.
The Institute for Sustainable Resources at QUT is developing a rural statistical sustainability framework. The purpose of this framework is to allow decision makers in rural Queensland to make informed decision for sustainable development. This framework focuses on three key areas of sustainable development: land and water management, labour resources and peri-urban development. The aim of my research is to develop a tool that incorporates this framework to facilitate evidence-based sustainable decision making in a way that is interactive, easy to understand and easy to use. It is proposed that the solution to this problem would be the development of a web-based spatial decision support system (SDSS). The main focus of this research is the design and development of a rich user interface for a SDSS that uses web 2.0 technologies. The proposed system will allow for future extensions and integrate analytical and statistical models to form a complete web-based SDSS. |
