Estimating the Conservation Cost of Environmental Goods: A Case Study of Agricultural Bio-DiversityKolombugamage M Karunarathna PhD 2009 - 2013 Faculty Institute for Sustainable Resources/QUT Business School Supervisor/s Dr Clevo Wilson, Prof Timothy Robinson Thesis Abstract Agricultural biodiversity performs many closely interrelated socio-economic and environmental functions. However, the agro-biodiversity has been lost at an alarming rate over the last few decades In recognition of its importance, international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture encourage the design of policies that convey economic incentives for farmers to conserve agricultural biodiversity. According to them, ever-increasing demand for land for human habitation and related developmental activities, poor land-use planning, weak enforcement of legislation and the absence of an integrated conservation management approach are the main threats to the conservation agricultural biodiversity.
Information is lacking on consumer and producer preferences on components of agricultural biodiversity and is the most important issue as it assist in the design of policies and programs for conservation of agricultural biodiversity. The study will partially fill this void in the literature and assist in developing the required policies and programs. The overall policy objective is to implement/develop economically profitable and environmentally feasible agri-ecosystem in any country. |
