Thesis Abstract

In Peninsular Malaysia, communities are increasingly demanding new quality standards for their river corridors and urban design teams are being charged with transforming urban river corridors into new recreational greenways and tourist destinations. However, political and environmental issues affecting the management and design process, a lack of coordination in river corridor management and overexploitation of river resources have presented serious challenges to the quality of Malaysian urban river corridors.

This research specifically seeks to investigate methods for improved environmental management, increase scenic beauty and encourage healthy integration between urban dwellers and river resources by investigating three urban river systems in Malaysia.

It will discover the key landscape character types of these river systems with an emphasis on their natural resources use, historical sites and unique local cultures. The specific aim is to develop a new framework for evaluating the landscape character of urban river corridors from the perspectives of opposing groups — the local community and urban design consultants. The scenic quality assessment technique will be applied to evaluate the scenic value in order to identify the landscape character of these places.
