Meridien Marinas have partnered with the ISR to create a framework for world’s best practice in environmental management for their Queensland marina developments.
Environmental management systems are those which assess and control the aspects of development and operations which may result in an environmental impact. The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) has implemented a framework for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) under ISO 14001. The goal is recognition and assessment of aspects which pose risks and minimisation of those which may result in adverse environmental impacts. An EMS involves stakeholders as well as the operation itself. These may include government and regulatory agencies, public interest groups, facility users, and proximal landowners/users.
Meridien is seeking an integrated EMS incorporating ongoing operational monitoring, active stakeholder communication and a regional management approach. ISR is assisting Meridien in formulating such a framework for their proposed marina developments in Queensland. This includes the ongoing development and operations of Horizon Shores near the Gold Coast and Port of Airlie at Airlie Beach.
In consultation with Meridien, regional regulatory and public interest groups, ISR will develop a framework for an expanded EMS which includes regional operators EMS’ and impacts within that of the Marina EMS.
The benefits of the project are an EMS which integrates a wider regional operations environmental aspects and impacts approach. Communication of outcomes and operational monitoring information to stakeholders is critical and will form a key component of the EMS.
