Sustainability covers many facets of modern life - images courtesy of Tourism Queensland image library

The area of 'sustainability' covers many facets of modern life. This includes urban and regional growth and development, the environment and society's interaction with it.

Complex systems require complex solutions and the ISR is at the forefront of developing practical cost-effective strategies for sustainable development. These strategies take full advantage of QUT's advanced expertise in the environmental and mathematical sciences, engineering, socio-economics, information technology, health and legal frameworks.

ISR has six major program areas:
Climate Change
Water Systems
Energy Systems
Environmental Trading
Biosecurity
Development and Infrastructure

Climate Change

Impact assessments, greenhouse gas inventories mitigation options and adaptation strategies to ensure sustainable development of urban and regional communities in response to human induced climate change.

Climate change is closely linked to all aspects of sustainable development. ISR provides national and international expertise in impact, mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Water Systems

Developing integrated water management solutions in the urban and peri-urban environments. ISR provides national and international expertise in the development of urban and regional water management strategies with a strong focus on computational modelling.

Energy Systems

Finding innovative solutions in alternative and renewable energy sources and products, and expanding the focus on biofuels and biocommodities. Coordinating energy research across QUT.

Environmental Trading

Development and implementation of projects for protecting natural environments and market-based strategies for achieving healthy sustainable ecosystems and the delivery of quality ecosystem services, including carbon management.

Biosecurity

Innovative strategies to ensure our diverse primary industries are protected from invasive species. Urban development and climate change is placing greater pressures on peri-urban environments and food security.

Development and Infrastructure

Providing innovative integrated solutions in urban and regional environments, in response to changing climate, water and energy needs and to ensure socio-economic well-being. Focusing on major planned communities and services infrastructure and with an overall effectiveness and sustainability theme.
